The day I decided to do this, I took the last ten bucks in my pocket and went to Elliott Bay Book Company. Down in the basement, they've got a wonderful selection of used books, many of them very old, for between a dollar and two. I bought two books (just in case I screwed up one), went down the street to the U Bookstore to get red and white metallic paints, and spent the last three bucks on a coffee concoction at the Starbucks in his building, where I sat for the next four hours and painted backgrounds.
This abstract one came from that day.
